Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, on Thursday, said President Bola Tinubu’s tax policies is “anti-northern” Nigerian and threatened that the region would show its “true colours.” According to him, the Tax Reforms Bills are aimed at favouring just a section of the country and shortchanging northern Nigeria, threatening that “we would show our true colour, we will fight for it.” Mohammed, who is the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum, is known for his opposition to Tinubu’s economic reforms which he has been saying were against the interest of Nigerians. Speaking when he received the Christian Community in Bauchi State who visited him at the Government House on Wednesday for the annual Christmas homage, the Governor called on the President to listen to the people and change the “anti-people” policies. He stressed that no policy should be imposed on the people because Nigeria does not operate an oligarchy system of government or a military rule. “I call on you to pray for Nigeria and pray for all the leaders of Nigeria including my humble self because Nigeria needs prayers. We are facing difficulties. There is a lot of wahala, there is a lot of hunger and it is something that we have to pray for God to obliterate. We have to say it but certainly, we are not insulting anybody. “We are calling on the presidency and the Federal Government to change their style. Whenever a policy is not popular, they should listen to the people, they should not be arrogant and think that whatever we bring, must be. This is not an oligarchy, this is not a military rule, they must listen to the people and that is what makes a good leader. “And we pledge to be loyal to them but anything they are doing contrary to that, they are calling for anarchy, they are calling for intransigence and it is unacceptable. There are a lot of wahala, we must work together across the party lines, across the tiers of government to provide succour and solace to the Nigerian people.” Mohammed further said: “It is not about pride or ego, we must be able to do things that people will be assisted with because whatever it is, the situation was not like this before. If the situation was bad before I came, tell me! And I must change and that is why the presidency must listen to the cries about Tax Reform. “It is not a good policy for northern Nigeria because we are not going to get money to pay you salaries, to do roads. They must listen, otherwise, they are calling for anarchy. And that is not good. They must not come up with policies that favour only one section of the country or even one state in the country. It is not about religion, it is not about tribe, it is about national unity, it is about national hegemony and this is what we are all about, good leadership. “We will continue to be loyal for the time being, if the situation persists, they will see our real colour, we are going to fight for it. “We are not afraid of them, even if it’s the President, we are not afraid of them, except that we only show respect. Whether it is a traditional institution, or it is the Federal Government or it is the President, honestly, we are not afraid of them but we can only show our obedience and respect to leadership. But we will not allow anyone to denigrate us. “People are suffering and are hungry. They need to look at their leadership style. Leadership is listening to the people and being sensitive to their feelings, leadership is doing what the people want. But I appeal to you (Nigerians) that since we’ve endured to this point, we should continue to be more patient because living in peace is what we need. “We should continue to pray for the President and his government that God will make them listen, may God make them change their minds and policies in a way that will be beneficial to all Nigerians, in a way that will drive away hunger, the insults, insecurity and all the things they want to bring that will cause division among Nigerians,” he stated. Mohammed expressed appreciation to the Christian Community in Bauchi State for the support to him throughout his sojourn in politics, saying that whatever he does for them is only a reciprocation of what they’ve been doing to him for decades.

Benazir was not just a political figure but a beacon of hope for the marginalized, the oppressed, and the forgotten. “Her unwavering commitment to her father’s vision of an egalitarian and prosperous Pakistan remains an inspiration for all of us,” he said. He said that like Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto believed in the power of the people and the importance of empowering workers, farmers, and the underprivileged as cornerstones for national progress. “Her philosophy of reconciliation, consultation, and understanding diverse perspectives laid the foundation for a forward-looking Pakistan,” he said. Bilawal reaffirmed his resolve to carry forward his mother’s legacy. “We are determined to follow her philosophy of human liberty and democratic norms, continuing our fight against terrorism, extremism, and any forces that threaten Pakistan’s stability,” he stated. In his message, President Asif Ali Zardari reaffirmed his commitment as the president to advance the vision of Shaheed Benazir of a peaceful, progressive and democratic Pakistan. “Her ideas live on, urging us to rise above differences and build a Pakistan that is united, inclusive, and just. So, let us not merely mourn her loss but commit to follow her enduring legacy.” He said Shaheed Benazir Bhutto was a trailblazer who dreamt of a Pakistan where the rights of all citizens, irrespective of colour, class and creed, would be protected, and the power of the people would reign supreme. Quoting Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, the president said Shaheed Benazir Bhutto once said, “Democracy is the best revenge” and these words were not just a defiant response to tyranny and dictatorship but reflected her profound belief in the transformative power of the people. He said Shaheed Benazir envisioned a Pakistan where every child could access education, where women could progress as equals, and where justice was not a privilege but a right. “Throughout her life, she raised her voice and worked for the uplift of the downtrodden segments of society and women’s empowerment,” he said. “Her legacy is eternal, her courage unmatched, and her vision our guiding star. Pakistan Khappay!,” he concluded. In her message on the occasion, PPP Vice-President and party’s parliamentary leader in the Senate Sherry Rehman paid a heartfelt tribute to the legacy of the trailblazing leader. She said: “Her loss was not just a devastating blow to the PPP; it was an unparalleled tragedy for the nation. The void left by her absence continues to be felt deeply across Pakistan.” She underscored the historical significance of December 27, describing it as one of the darkest days in Pakistan’s history. Sherry Rehman applauded Shaheed Benazir’s transformative contributions to the country’s socio-economic fabric. “Among her many achievements, the Lady Health Worker Programme stands as a testament to her commitment to public health,” Senator Rehman noted. “Lauded as a ‘gold standard’ by the World Bank, this initiative brought healthcare to the doorsteps of millions in rural and underserved areas.” She also underscored the pivotal role of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) in uplifting the marginalised, which continues to uplift millions of impoverished families. From the Benazir Kafalat programme offering direct cash transfers, to Benazir Nashonuma, which promotes maternal and child health, and the Benazir Taleemi Wazaif initiative that invests in education, BISP has become a beacon of hope for millions. In a related development, President Asif Ali Zardari arrived in Sukkur on a three-day visit to attend the anniversary of his late wife and former prime minister Benazir Bhutto. Zardari will address the 17th death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto at Gharhi Khuda Bux Bhutto on Friday (today). On his arrival, the president was received by Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, governors of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and PPP senior leadership. Earlier, talking to the media at the Sukkur Airport, CM Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah said PPP and PPPP activists and leaders from all over the country will pay tribute to martyred Benazir Bhutto on her death anniversary tomorrow. He said PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto will be the next prime minister by getting a clear majority in the next general elections. Shah demanded Sindh’s rightful share from the federal government saying the process of releasing provincial funds has been very slow. Talking about PTI’s Imran Khan, Murad Ali Shah said the US has no authority to interfere in the affairs of Pakistan by demanding his release. Imran is involved in cases and courts alone will decide his fate. The PTI founder’s call for civil disobedience will be ignored and will have no effect anywhere in the country. Speaking next, KP’s Governor Faisal Karim Kundi said that the PPP handed over a peaceful Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2013. However, after several years of PTI rule, there is severe unrest in the province. He said the Kurram situation has been mishandled by the provincial government. Kundi said the decision about the governor’s rule has to be taken by the federal government. Such a disposition is allowed under the Constitution. Member PPP CEC Qamar Zaman Kaira said party cadres from all over the country will attend BB’s death anniversary today. Meanwhile, all is set for the death anniversary of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto here. A 60-foot-wide main stage has been decorated with party flags, and portraits of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto, Governor KP and Governor Punjab, Chief Minister Sindh and several other leaders will address the death anniversary. To boost security and surveillance, CCTV cameras have been installed around Garhi Khuda Bakhsh Bhutto and other places by Larkana Police, and 8,500 police officers and personnel will also perform their duties, including SSU commandos and traffic police personnel.

NEW YORK (AP) — Brian Thompson led one of the biggest health insurers in the U.S. but was unknown to millions of people his decisions affected. Then Wednesday's targeted fatal shooting of the UnitedHealthcare CEO on a midtown Manhattan sidewalk thrust the executive and his business into the national spotlight. Thompson, who was 50, had worked at the giant UnitedHealth Group Inc for 20 years and run the insurance arm since 2021 after running its Medicare and retirement business. As CEO, Thompson led a firm that provides health coverage to more than 49 million Americans — more than the population of Spain. United is the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans, the privately run versions of the U.S. government’s Medicare program for people age 65 and older. The company also sells individual insurance and administers health-insurance coverage for thousands of employers and state-and federally funded Medicaid programs. The business run by Thompson brought in $281 billion in revenue last year, making it the largest subsidiary of the Minnetonka, Minnesota-based UnitedHealth Group. His $10.2 million annual pay package, including salary, bonus and stock options awards, made him one of the company's highest-paid executives. The University of Iowa graduate began his career as a certified public accountant at PwC and had little name recognition beyond the health care industry. Even to investors who own its stock, the parent company's face belonged to CEO Andrew Witty, a knighted British triathlete who has testified before Congress. When Thompson did occasionally draw attention, it was because of his role in shaping the way Americans get health care. At an investor meeting last year, he outlined his company's shift to “value-based care,” paying doctors and other caregivers to keep patients healthy rather than focusing on treating them once sick. “Health care should be easier for people,” Thompson said at the time. “We are cognizant of the challenges. But navigating a future through value-based care unlocks a situation where the ... family doesn’t have to make the decisions on their own.” Thompson also drew attention in 2021 when the insurer, like its competitors, was widely criticized for a plan to start denying payment for what it deemed non-critical visits to hospital emergency rooms. “Patients are not medical experts and should not be expected to self-diagnose during what they believe is a medical emergency,” the chief executive of the American Hospital Association wrote in an open letter addressed to Thompson. “Threatening patients with a financial penalty for making the wrong decision could have a chilling effect on seeking emergency care.” United Healthcare responded by delaying rollout of the change. Thompson, who lived in a Minneapolis suburb and was the married father of two sons in high school, was set to speak at an investor meeting in a midtown New York hotel. He was on his own and about to enter the building when he was shot in the back by a masked assailant who fled on foot before pedaling an e-bike into Central Park a few blocks away, the New York Police Department said. Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said investigators were looking at Thompson's social media accounts and interviewing employees and family members. “Didn’t seem like he had any issues at all,” Kenny said. "He did not have a security detail.” AP reporters Michael R. Sisak and Steve Karnowski contributed to this report. Murphy reported from Indianapolis. Copyright 2024 The Associated Press. "All New York State elected officials and policymakers must understand the issues faced by our neighbors who are 50-plus, and this insightful roadmap provides the blueprint to do just that," said AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel . "New Yorkers 50-plus helped build our state and make it great. They face many challenges, including ageism, a lack of affordable housing, the rising costs of medications, and more. Through thoughtful solutions to these issues, we can help older New Yorkers thrive as they age in the communities they love." The state's older adult population is growing rapidly. Residents age 50 and older now number 7 million – more than a third of New York State's population – and more than 4.5 million New Yorkers are 60 or older. According to a 2023 report from the Center for an Urban Future, New York State's 65-and-over population grew by 31% since 2011, with the 65-plus segment accounting for nearly one-fifth – 18% – of the state's population. Older adults are the driving force in New York's economy, cultural life, and volunteer base. They also represent the largest voter turnout bloc. AARP has collaborated with this increasingly diverse population to address priorities to make New York better for residents of all backgrounds. Drawing on research and analysis, including a series of briefs about substantial challenges faced by older New Yorkers, AARP is providing this blueprint so New York leaders can use it as a roadmap to ensure New Yorkers 50-plus continue to enhance the Empire State. The report calls on the Governor and Legislature to develop clear plans to make the state more age-friendly and tackle the challenges faced most by New Yorkers 50-plus, including a lack of affordable housing, workplace age discrimination, gaps in access to technology, food insecurity, inadequate coordination of services among government agencies, inaccessible public transportation, hazardous streets, social isolation, caregiving shortfalls and insufficiencies in home-based care.
