But the Republican president-elect is already moving aggressively not just to fill and outline policy goals, but to achieve . First lady Jill Biden is attending in his place. “I think you have seen more happen in the last two weeks than you’ve seen in the last four years. And we’re not even there yet,” Trump said in . For all of Trump's bold talk, though, it is unclear how many of his efforts will bear fruit. Breaking precedent The pre-inauguration threats and deal-making are highly unusual, like so much of what Trump does, said Julian Zelizer, a political historian at Princeton University. “Transitions are always a little complicated in this way. Even though we talk about one president at a time," he said, “the reality is one president plus. And that plus can act assertively sometimes." Zelizer said that is particularly true of Trump, who was president previously and already has relationships with many foreign leaders such as Macron, who invited both Trump and Biden to Paris this weekend as part of the Notre Dame celebration. “Right now he’s sort of governing even though he’s not the president yet. He’s having these public meetings with foreign leaders, which aren't simply introductions. He's staking out policy and negotiating things from drug trafficking to tariffs," Zelizer said. One president, two voices There is no prohibition on incoming officials or nominees meeting with foreign officials, and it is common and fine for them to do so — unless those meetings are designed to subvert or otherwise impact current U.S. policy. Trump aides were said to be especially cognizant of potential conflicts given their experience in 2016, when interactions between Trump allies and Russian officials came under scrutiny. That included a phone call in which Trump's incoming national security adviser, Michael Flynn, discussed new sanctions with Russia’s ambassador to the United States, suggesting things would improve after Trump became president. Flynn was later charged with lying to the FBI about the conversation. Trump’s incoming press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that, “All transition officials have followed applicable laws in their interactions with foreign nationals.” She added: “World leaders recognize that President Trump is returning to power and will lead with strength to put the best interests of the United States of America first again. That is why many foreign leaders and officials have reached out to correspond with President Trump and his incoming team.” Such efforts can nonetheless cause complications. If, say, Biden is having productive conversations on a thorny foreign policy issue and Trump weighs in, that could make it harder for Biden “because people are hearing two different voices” that may be in conflict, Zelizer said. Leaders like Russia's Vladimir Putin and Netanyahu may also anticipate a more favorable incoming administration and wait Biden out, hoping for more a better deal. Coordination between incoming and outgoing administrations It also remains unclear how extensively the Biden administration has been kept apprised of Trump transition efforts. Although there is no requirement that an incoming administration coordinate calls and meetings with foreign officials with the State Department or National Security Council, that has long been considered standard practice. That is, in part, because transition teams, particularly in their early days and weeks, do not always have the latest information about the state of relations with foreign nations and may not have the resources, including interpretation and logistical ability, to handle such meetings efficiently. Still, the Biden and Trump teams have been talking, particularly on the Middle East, with the incoming and outgoing administrations having agreed to work together on efforts to free hostages who remain in held in Gaza, according to a U.S. official, who, like others, was not authorized to comment publicly about the sensitive talks and spoke on condition of anonymity. That includes conversations between Witkoff and Biden’s foreign policy team as well as Waltz and Biden national security adviser Jake Sullivan. Last month, Biden administration officials said they had kept Trump’s team closely apprised of efforts to broker a on the Israel-Lebanon border. “I just want to be clear to all of our adversaries, they can’t play the incoming Trump administration off of the Biden administration. I’m regularly talking to the Biden people. And so, this is not a moment of opportunity or wedges for them," Waltz said Friday in a Fox Business interview. But when it comes to immigration, Biden administration officials haven’t been entirely in the loop on discussions around how to execute on Trump’s pledge to deport millions of migrants, according to four administration officials with knowledge of the transition who spoke on condition of anonymity. That’s not terribly surprising given how differently the teams view migration. Here's the latest: U.S. airlines are preparing for a Thanksgiving holiday rush, and so are the U.S. Postal Service, United Parcel Service and FedEx. Shipping companies will deliver about 2.2 billion packages to homes and businesses across the U.S. from Thanksgiving to Dec. 31, said Satish Jindel, a shipping and logistics expert and president of ShipMatrix. That’s down from 2.3 billion packages last year. Because the shopping period is a week shorter than in 2023, consumers are shopping further ahead of Black Friday and more purchases are taking place in physical stores, he said. A team led by Prof. Jang Kyung-In from the Department of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering (DGIST) has developed a three-dimensional stretchable piezoelectric energy harvester that can harvest electrical energy using body movements. The device is to be used as a wearable energy harvester as it can be attached to the skin or clothes. The work is in the journal . Energy harvesters are of two types based on whether they work on the triboelectric effect or . The device developed by Prof. Jang's team is based on the piezoelectric effect, which produces electricity from such as elastic skin or joint movements. The literature contains several studies that have focused on piezoelectric energy harvesters, but most of them use organic or composite-based piezoelectric materials, which have low energy efficiency. This made it difficult to harvest enough power from , limiting their use as wearable energy devices. The device developed by Prof. Jang's team is based on the lead zirconate titanate (PZT), which has a high piezoelectric efficiency. PZT has excellent piezoelectric performance but is hard and brittle, making it difficult to use it as a stretchable device. However, Prof. Jang's team designed PZT into a three-dimensional structure that is insensitive to deformation, ensuring high energy efficiency and stretchability at the same time. They also introduced a new curvature-specific coupling electrode design to divide the electrodes into different sections so that the electrical energy of the device is not canceled out. INWOOD — Musselman High School's Choral Department is hosting the Snow Globe Festival this weekend, where families will gather for a fun evening listening to the choir, playing games and spending time together. This event, which will take place at Musselman High School at 4 p.m. on Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday, will help them raise money for the Kaleidoscope Show Choir to compete in the Show Choir Nationals, where only three West Virginia groups have performed. Last year, the choral department sold special treats, such as hot cocoa, to raise money to go to nationals. This year, it decided to do even more by creating a fun and unique event for the community. James Miller, Musselman High School choral director, shared that the festival is a great way for the choir to connect with the community. “What I love, as a choral director, is just giving the students the chance to sing,” Miller said. “A lot of people don’t think about what we do for the community. The band plays during football games and brings people together for that, but the choir finds other ways to have a positive impact.” The event begins with a performance from the choir. Then, guests will enjoy a meal before trying out the different games and activities throughout the school cafeteria. Students from the choir planned and will lead each station. There might even be a few special holiday guests who will come to visit. At the end of the festival, guests will gather for a Christmas sing-along and the choir will sing a few more songs. Alexander Thomas, dance captain for the choir and senior at Musselman High School, is excited to perform. He helped choreograph one of the songs and also helped teach others how to dance. Analysts highlight further resistance in the 25,200–25,400 zone while maintaining a positive outlook as long as the index stays above 24,300. "Technically, the support base now shifts upward towards 24,500 on an intermediate basis, which is likely to cushion any intra-week blips, followed by a sacrosanct support zone placed from the 24,350–24,250 zone," according to Osho Krishnan, senior analyst of technical and derivatives at Angel One. "On the higher end of the spectrum, 24,800, followed by 25,000–25,100, is likely to be seen as the next potential resistance for the benchmark index in the upcoming week," Krishnan said. Bacterial biofilm formation in the food industry is a significant concern, affecting food safety , production efficiency, economic loss, and consumer trust. Most existing research on foodborne pathogenic biofilms has focused on wet surface biofilms (WSBs), as it is generally believed that microorganisms cannot survive under dry conditions, let alone form biofilms. However, recent recalls and outbreaks of Salmonella associated with low-moisture food (LMF) have provided mounting evidence that pathogens can persist in dry conditions. A research team led by Assistant Professor LI Dan from the NUS Department of Food Science and Technology has provided a detailed characterization of the Salmonella DSBs examining their morphology, single-cell landscape, and response to sanitization techniques in comparison to traditional WSBs. The efforts of this research offer valuable insights for managing dry biofilms in the food industry. The research findings were published in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology on 4 November 2024. The study explored the structural and functional characteristics of Salmonella Typhimurium DSB using advanced microscopy techniques, including confocal laser scanning, transmission electron, and scanning electron microscopy. These analyses revealed unique features of DSB compared to WSB. Specifically, DSB cells are surrounded by a dense, compact capsule that likely contributes to their higher antimicrobial resistance, while WSB cells display distinct plasma and outer membrane layers. Additionally, DSBs exhibit a "sandwich-like" vertical structure, with intact cells at the core and damaged cells on the outer layer. To understand functional diversity within the biofilm, single-cell transcriptomics was employed, identifying bacterial clusters with active antioxidative and virulence functions—highlighting potential safety concerns for LMFs. The team also developed a water-free antibiofilm strategy tailored for the LMF industry. This method combines the flavonoid morin with 70% isopropyl alcohol, offering an effective sanitization method without requiring water.
